Train Windows: A Note on the Cover Poster
A century ago (give or take a couple of decades), rail travel was the way to go. Trains from the Gare d'Orleans took travelers from Paris to the region and throughout the region. Cars and autocars (large bus-like automobiles) gave them access to castles located outside the major cities of the area.
Posters lured tourists from Paris to the Loire Valley and elsewhere, the poster-mad French elevating advertising to an art form by romanticizing and stylizing every possible product, including travel destinations (today's photo-posters pale by comparison). Some of the top artists of the day chose this medium with which to express themselves.
One series of posters that was produced by SNCF in the late 40s, early 50s shows scenes in various parts of France as seen through a train window. The images are so dynamic, the angled windows giving them the feeling of movement.
There are several posters in the series -- Paris, the Alps, the Basque Coast, Auvergne, Brittany, and of course the Chateaux of the Loire.
The poster for the Loire is by Garcia and shows a small classical mansion across a topiary garden. The chateau looks strikingly similar to Cheverny, but not exactly, which means that it is probably Villandry, which resembles Cheverny and has the requisite gardens.

The Dutch Open
In 1912 a number of 'worried' individuals in Arnhem opened an open-air museum. They saw that with growing industrialization and urbanization a great wealth of Dutch traditions and regional diversity would be lost. The founders leased the Waterberg, an estate in the town of Arnhem. Six buildings were transferred to the area and opened as the Dutch Open on July 13, 1918. In 1941 it became Openluchtmuseum “National Museum of Folklore”.
The Dutch Open is a national museum of the culture of the daily lives of ordinary people.

Information about Wallis
The canton of Wallis, or, in French: Valais, borders on France and Italy. Therefore there is a great variety in language and culture. French is spoken in the west of Wallis, while German is spoken in the east. The language border is between the towns of Sierre and Leuk in the Rhône valley. One of the main attractions is the Grosser Aletsch glacier, the largest glacier in the Alps. Lovers of sun will feel at home in the warm Rhône valley, which is, so to speak, the 'backbone' of this beautiful canton. The Rhône valley has many side-valleys, each of which with its own charm. Many spectacular viewing points can be reached in Wallis. You will find the highest mountains in Europe here, among which the impressive Matterhorn and the Dufourspitze, 4,634 m (15,203 ft) over sea and the highest point in the country. The Mont Blanc lies just across the French/Italian border. It is the highest mountain in Western Europe (4,807 m, 15,771 ft). |

ABOVE: Kapellbrücke (Chapel Bridge) and water tower today |
Lucerne Switzerland - Kapellbrücke and water tower
Lucerne (Luzerne in German) may be Switzerland's most popular tourist destination. It's an essential stop on European bus tours that spend a day or two in Switzerland, and no wonder: the scenery is breathtaking, the town is dotted with medieval structures, shopping opportunities abound, mountain and lake excursions are nearby, and attractions like the Verkehrshaus (Swiss Transportation Museum) make Lucerne a magnet for Swiss day trippers and foreign visitors. Two of the "must-see" attractions in Lucerne are its medieval covered bridges across the Reuss River, one of which Kapellbrücke (see photo) has become the unofficial symbol of the city. This bridge is located near the junction of the river and the Vierwaldstättersee, or Lake of the Four Forest Cantons (also known as Lake Lucerne). The bridge bends as it leaves the shore, then angles across the river past a stone Wasserturm (Water Tower) that is believed to have once served as the lucerna, or lighthouse, after which the town was named.
The Kapellbrücke--"Chapel Bridge" in English--was built in 1333. As you cross its 200-meter length, you'll see 120 captioned triangular paintings from the early 1500s that chronicle the city's history. The paintings feature St. Mauritius and St. Leodegar, the patron saints of Lucerne.
In reality, the bridge isn't as old as it looks. The Kapellbrücke was nearly destroyed by a 1993 fire, and much of what stands today is an excellent restoration (or reproduction, if you're a cynic or uncompromising realist).
